Unida - Coping With The Urban Coyote

With the voice of a hurricane and a reputation to match, John Garcia is a cut above the average vocalist. Putting aside all that he has achieved in the past with Kyuss and more recently with the short lived Slo Burn, the man has an incredible talent and Unida's debut full length is a beast of an album.

Thoroughly ROCK throughout, it showcases Garcia's phenomenal voiice to maximum effect. While Josh Homme has sought to bring us new sounds that we have never heard before, Garcia's band revisit rather straightforward rock territory, but they sure do it well.

Opener Thorn crunches into life with the a greasy guitar sound that perfectly marks out the territory that Garcia's latest band of desperados inhabit. This is late night, fucked up bluesy rock with all the trimmings and Garcia is in magnificent form, hollering his ambiguous lyrics over the band's thunderous foundations. "Riiiiiiide with me baby, and just riiiiiiiide all night long" he proclaims as Black Woman explodes into action.

Rarely has he sung so well, or sounded as is he was having a blast, doing what he does best. A great leap has been made from last year's The Best of Wayne Gro and Unida have emerged from the immense shadow of Kyuss to carve out an extremely well worn, but utterly enjoyable niche for themselves.(9)
